Two species, the Olive Ridley and Leatherback are the only two species that nest on Los Cabos beaches.
hey need everyone's help...... to survive! Sea turtles survived the age of the dinosaurs, yet in only a couple of decades, man, through coastal development, pollution, poaching and other predators have decimated the populations to dangerously low levels.
Thanks to many dedicated people like don Manuel Orantes, who since 1994 has been working to protect the turtles in the Estero de San José, 98,000 hatchlings have been safely assisted to the sea. The continuing effort has resulted in the formation of "Campamento Tortugero del Estero San Jose del Cabo", an organization plegded to save the turtles through conservation and education.
Mr. Orantes is making a big difference, and invites everyone to learn more about the turtles. Help protect them by patrolling the beautiful beaches under the stars and have the unique experience of assisting thousands of tiny hatchling to the sea.
The supervised groups are limited to parties with a maximum of eight people. The Olive Ridley nesting season is from July through October, and the Leatherback, the largest of the sea turtle species is October through April, but are seen nesting in smaller numbers year round.
Help is always welcome here, and every person can make a difference.
Sea turtles migrate the world's oceans and have come to Los Cabos beaches to lay their eggs for millions of years. Two of the world's eight sea turtle species nest in Los Cabos. The smallest, the Olive Ridley, also known as the golfina, nests June through to December.
Join Baja and Beyond on this five-day adventure where you'll experience first-hand, the enjoyment and satisfaction of assisting an endangered species, the Olive Ridley sea turtle, as it makes its way to sea.
The 1000-acre Rancho San Cristobal Nature Reserve, a beautiful sandy beach along the Pacific Ocean just north of Baja's Cabo San Lucas, is the venue for this unique and exciting program.
The beach at Ranch Punta San Cristobal will become a turtle camp for this event. The week's schedule includes nursery training and work for handling the eggs in tagging, measuring and identification. It will also include in-depth biology, taxonomy and ecology for your better understanding of this species.
