Tourist Visa Requirement

What do I need to get one?

Proof of citizenship. This can be either a passport or a certified copy of your birth certificate accompanied by a photo ID. A passport is the document of preferenceBe prepared to fill out the information requested which includes your place of birth, your destination and the reason for your visit.

A visa is not required for a tourist/transit stay up to 180 days. A tourist card, also known as a FM-T, available from Mexican consulates and most airlines serving Mexico, is issued instead. Travelers entering Mexico for purposes other than tourism require a visa and must carry a valid U.S. passport. The Government of Mexico charges an entry fee to U.S. citizens traveling to Mexico's interior.

Where do I get one?

You can pick up a blank FMT form at any Mexican Consulate or at the travel agency issuing your plane ticket. If they do not provide you with one or you simply forget to ask for it, you can pick one up at the check in counter at the airport or on the plane while en route to your destination. If you are coming to Mexico via automobile, you can request an FMT form at the border.

Do I need it?

Yes! You will not be allowed into the country without it and, since you will have to turn it in upon returning home its strongly recommended that you don't lose it. Should it get stolen, report it immediately to the nearest Mexican Immigration office and be prepared to show proof of citizenship as well as your airline ticket, if you came to Mexico by plane.

Upon arrival in Mexico, business travelers must complete and submit a form (Form FM-N) authorizing the conduct of business, but not employment, for a 30-day period.  Travelers entering Mexico for purposes other than tourism or business or for stays of longer than 180 days require a visa and must carry a valid U.S. passport.  U.S. citizens planning to work or live in Mexico should apply for the appropriate Mexican visa at the Mexican Embassy in Washington, D.C., or nearest Mexican consulate in the United States.

Limitations

A tourist visa is simply a permit to enter the country as a visitor. While you are here you may not work and the amount of "stuff" you can bring with you will be limited to just about what you would need for a 15 to 30 day stay. If you are planning on being in Mexico longer than the time allowed by the FMT, you will want to consider the other alternatives listed below.
